Surviving the 9-hour flight – My Top 4 Tips

The flight from Heathrow Terminal 2 to Vancouver International is 9 hours in duration and I have to admit I felt it during the last 2-3 hours.  I did the journey to Montreal last year and that was 7 hours, but this time I found that extra couple of hours was a real killer.  So here are my personal top 4 tips for having a more enjoyable flight:

  1.  Entertain yourself.  Sleep passes the time wonderfully but if, like me, you are one of the unfortunate people who simply fail to sleep on airplanes no matter how tired you are, bring something to do.  I read 2 short books on this flight and watched 2 movies, played games on the in-flight TV gizmo thing.  I honestly would have had cabin fever without doing this.
  2. Walk around.  I always fail to do this and I always regret it.  In fact, I regret it as soon as I get up to get off the plane and my hips no longer work.  Then I regret it again the following day.  On a long-haul flight, you are probably going to need to use the facilities at least once so take the opportunity to stretch your legs.
  3. Dress comfortably – avoid tight waistbands or anything restrictive.  Go for comfort over style.
  4. Spend a bit more on some leg room and a seat by a window.  If you’re flying from Heathrow grab a seat on the left-hand side of the plane to get the best view of the Rockies as you come into land in Vancouver.  Definitely, a view not to be missed.
